Website of the Week
Talk about snail mail...circa 1924. Photo courtesy Calisphere. |
Calisphere, a project of the University of California
Libraries, is an open source platform that allows digital
collections from California's public and academic libraries,
archives, and museums to be shared. Collections that have used products such as
Omeka, Content DM, or Archivists' Toolkit for data management, can
"dump" the data into Calisphere to make collections easier
to browse and search.
Calisphere organizes the information into collections
that include images, documents, letters, artwork, diaries, videos and audio
recordings...and is a great place to search for primary sources. There
are currently over 4000,000 images, texts and recordings available, and the
collection continues to grow.
A list of contributing institutions is included, and collections
can be searched by title or theme. Once you search for a particular
institution's collection, you can refine your search within the collection by
title/keyword, type of item, and even decade.
Happy searching!

Unidos Por La Causa: The Chicano Experience
Unidos Por La Causa: The Chicano
Experience in San Diego
The actual
exhibit is currently available for viewing at the City College Library. It has traveled around to multiple locations
over the last couple years including SDSU and the Logan Heights branch of San
Diego Public. I believe it is scheduled
to stay at City through spring 2016.
A bilingual
interactive online exhibit can be viewed here:
Unidos Por La Causa: The Chicano
Experience in San Diego is "a display of photographs, art, and historic documents
illustrating the early years of the Chicano movement for social justice and
civil rights in San Diego. The exhibit includes a rich and vivid presentation
of a selection of 62 movement-related posters and broadsides produced in the
1960s and 1970s promoting anti-war marches, UFW protests, student conferences
and many other cultural and political events, demonstrating the movement's
struggle for equal education and its resistance to injustice."
The online
version includes some videos. Meanwhile,
both the online version and the actual exhibit include many primary
documents. They are both very comprehensive
and impressive. Carve out some time to
take a look at one or the other, or both!

Improved accessibility at the Library

The improved accessibility is a welcome addition to this area of the building, which supports both foot traffic and the transportation of many types of mobile equipment.

The
SEP is an online encyclopedia of Philosophy. The SEP is also an outstanding

Founded
in 1995, the SEP was initially developed with funding from the NEH (National

access to the Encyclopedia is supported by many university libraries and
library consortia.
Each entry
has information needed to cite the article.

Website of the Week
Whether you are interested in getting the more nutrition
from your food, or ensuring farm animals are treated humanely, or want your
food to be raised in an environmentally friendly manner, the Eatwild.com website has something for you!
“Eatwild.com is owned and operated by Jo Robinson, an
investigative journalist and New
York Times bestselling author
who specializes in science-based health information. Jo has been investigating
the differences between wild plants and game and the foods in our supermarkets
for the past 15 years.”
I found the website by looking for sources for grass-fed
beef, because I have heard so much about the bad environmental effects of feed
lots, to say nothing of the unpleasant surroundings for the cattle
themselves. I also worry about eating
meat from animals raised with too many antibiotics and steroids. The Eat Wild site began by specializing in
information about pasture raised animals but has expanded to include
information on organic and locally produced fruits and vegetables as well. Jo
includes many charts and graphs and articles from other ‘experts’. She also provides links to numerous other
websites which can provide additional information.
Do yourself a favor and check out the Eatwild.com website today!

Check It Out
October 2015 is Disabilities Awareness Month!
Did you know in the Library’s glass display case on the upper floor that there's a great title honoring this theme to check out? It is called, Disability and Identity : Negotiating Self in a Changing Society. It was written by Rosalyn Benjamin Darling and published in 2013. Its call number is: HV1568 .D367 2013.
This book can be found through the SWC Library’s Search the Library Catalog webpage. Just type in the title in the search box and you can find it in the results list.
This book discusses the relationship between societal views and the self-conceptions of people with mental and physical impairments. Disability and Identity examines how resilient people with disabilities are in the face of social and material barriers while describing what it means to be “different” in a changing society.
Come to the library to see more Disabilities Awareness-related titles on display this month.
Cheers!
