Top Three Reasons to Use Library Databases

Number 3: "Online Pregnancy Test"

Seems like a good idea... but wait, how would that work exactly??! There is no such thing -- this is a fake website that looks real and sounds real, but is totally made up.

Library databases contain credible information from published sources such as journals, magazines, newspapers, books, and e-books. You won't find any fake information there!

Number 2: "List of Hoaxes on Wikipedia"

Here is a collection of deliberate hoaxes -- fake pages and incorrect information on Wikipedia. The Wikipedia page warns readers: "A hoax is considered notable if it evaded detection for more than one month or was discussed by reliable sources in the media. This list is incomplete, as many hoaxes remain undiscovered."

Library databases contain credible information from authors who have the appropriate education and background that makes them uniquely qualified to write articles, books, or reference book entries. You won't find any hoaxes!

Number 1 Reason to Use Library Databases: THEY ARE FREE

Library databases are free for all currently-enrolled SWC students and staff! They are also accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Search for credible information from thousands of sources at once!

Have a question? Ask a librarian! We are happy to help.

Check It Out

by Sean Cliver
Gingko Press, 2009
Main Campus Stacks GV859.8 .C55 2009

Available for four-week check out with your SWC photo ID card.

In The Disposable Skateboard Bible, legendary skateboard graphic artist Sean Cliver (who, in 1989, landed his first job as a designer at the skateboard company Powell-Peralta) provides a fascinating history of skateboard art and culture, from the 1950s to the present. The book is a comprehensive encyclopedia of the skateboard, with hundreds of images of deck designs over the past 60 years. I was amazed to see not only the skateboard I rode *everywhere* in Chula Vista in the 1960s and 1970s, but also the skateboards the neighbor kids had!

In addition to encyclopedic info about the designers and companies, the author includes many brief essays written by skaters and designers. My favorite story is of "the $6000 Hawk", a thrilling tale of how, in 1992, a UK collector found (in a warehouse) a stack of six Powell-Peralta Tony Hawk boards. He wasn't particularly thrilled to find them (as he was looking for something else), but decided to buy the least-scuffed one for 25 pounds ($50 USD). He later sold it on eBay for nearly $2000...and the buyer turned around and resold it to another buyer for $6000! The commentary by the UK collector *and* by the $6000 buyer (who has had tons of offers, and is unwilling to sell), is an exciting read. Amazingly, no one knows what became of the other 5 boards!

Even those who are not interested in skateboarding will find the book fun to look through - the artwork itself is superb!

Advice from Dr. Seuss

American author and illustrator Dr Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel, 1904-1991) sits at his drafting table in his home office with a copy of his book, The Cat in the Hat, in La Jolla, California, on April 25, 1957. (Photo and caption credit: Biography Resource Center.)

On Monday, UC San Diego announced that Audrey Geisel donated $3 million to their main campus Geisel Library. The library is named for her and her husband, Ted "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. According to KPBS, "The gift will fund improvements to interior public spaces at the 43-year-old library to meet the needs of students, faculty, and other users in the digital age."

Plastic Purge
by Michael SanClements
St. Martin's Press, 2014
Call Number: TP1122.S24 2014
Available for 4 week check out with your SWC photo ID.

The best summary of this book is contained in its subtitle, "How to use less plastic, eat better, keep toxins out of your body, and help save the sea turtles." In fascinating detail the author covers how ubiquitous plastics are in our lives, and how toxic bad plastic can be to our environment and our health.

Spoiler alert: there is a section called "Bottled Water is for Suckers"!

Smart Irrigation Month is here!

Did you know in the library’s glass display case there's a great title honoring this theme to check out? It's called, Pillar of Sand: can the irrigation miracle last? It's written by Sandra Postel and published in 1999.

There is one copy in the library’s Main Stacks with the call number: S618 .P67 1999, but is currently housed in the glass display case in the library’s upper floor.

It can be found through the SWC Library’s Search the Library Catalog webpage. Just type in the title in the search box and you can find it in the results list.

This book provides information on the history, challenges, and pitfalls of agricultural irrigation starting from ancient Egypt to twentieth-century America. Pillar of Sand also highlights how water is used today but, more importantly, presents one strategy to improve irrigation methods for the future.

Come to the library to see more Smart Irrigation-related titles on display this month.

Cheers!

Website of the Week

Discovering your ancestry can be very interesting and rewarding. But, for people who descend from former slaves, it can be a difficult and even impossible endeavor. The Freedmen’s Bureau Project is a new attempt to shed light on the ancestry of people who were bound by slavery.

Search by first and last name to see how far you can trace your lineage. Make a family tree and add stories and photos to ensure the legacy of your family continues on forever. In addition to searching for ancestry, this project offers individuals the opportunity to participate in making more records accessible.

“To help bring thousands of records to light, the Freedmen’s Bureau Project was created as a set of partnerships between FamilySearch International and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Afro¬-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), and the California African American Museum.”

Feet, don't fail me now : the rogue's guide to running the marathon
by Ben Kaplan.
Vancouver : Greystone Books, 2014.
Call Number: GV1065.17 .T73 K36 2014
Available for four-week check out with your SWC photo ID card.

http://swcclibrary.swccd.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=1435UN42147D1.5478&profile=main--4&uri=link=3100007~!213778~!3100001~!3100002&aspect=subtab13&menu=search&ri=1&source=~!horizon&term=Feet%2C+don%27t+fail+me+now+%3A+the+rogue%27s+guide+to+running+the+marathon+%2F&index=ALLTITL

Running is the new black. From “Color Runs” to “Zombie Runs,” running events have become a huge industry in San Diego County. So, you wouldn’t be the first person to consider taking up running, and certainly won’t be the last. A marathon - 26.2 miles to be exact - is not just running. You need to prepare; you must practice. There is a good reason that the marathon’s namesake died right after running so far.

Enter Feet, Don’t Fail Me Now: The Rogue’s Guide to Running the Marathon by Ben Kaplan. This is a fun read about a topic that, quite frankly, can be very boring to study. Self-described as “average,” Kaplan makes running and completing a marathon accessible for just about everyone. You’ll learn about the right kind of shoes to buy, the best posture for running, and all about cross-training (which is training your body for a marathon by doing some other form of exercise other than running).

This book is divided into four main parts, which are the four types of races that Kaplan recommends building up to - 5K, 10K, Half-Marathon, and Marathon. Each chapter features a Soundtrack to get you in the right mindset for what you are about to read; these selections come from rock stars from different genres of music. There are also funny interviews and many breaks from strictly running topics.

Lace up those sneakers, and run to the Library to get this title! Then, sit back and relax a bit before you conquer your first marathon!
