Check It Out
December 2016 is Human Rights Awareness Month.
Did you know in the Library’s collections there's a great title honoring this theme to check out?
Human rights : the hard questions
Editors: Cindy Holder and David Reidy
Cambridge University Press, 2013.
Main Library Stacks Collection: Call Number: JC571 .H84 2013
This book provides a discussion of human rights from theoretical and philosophical viewpoints. The editors chose essays written by distinguished philosophers, political scientists, international lawyers, environmentalists, and anthropologists. Examples of questions they debate include: What do human rights require of the global economy?; Does it make sense to secure them by force?; Is global climate change a human rights issue?; and Is there a human right to democracy?
Come to the library to see more Human Rights Awareness-related titles on display this month.

Human Rights Day
December is Human Rights Awareness Month
Human Rights Day is observed on December 10, in commemoration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights drafted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948.
This document was a milestone in paving the way to identify fundamental human rights that must be universally protected.
Article 1 of the Declaration states:
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.(Source: Universal Declaration of Human Rights, United Nations)
Visit our display on the third floor of the Library to learn more about Human Rights Awareness Month. We have books, e-books, articles, films, and more!

Website of the Week
Digital Collections at UC San Diego
The UC San Diego Library Digital Collections website is a public search and discovery interface that currently features more than 50,000 digital objects, including documents, photographs, audio, video, and data sets, which reflect a range of materials collected, managed, and preserved by the Library to support teaching, learning and research. Content has been drawn from across the Library's collections with strengths in the areas of Baja California, Melanesia, Oceanography, and UC San Diego history. The Digital Collections website represents only a fraction of the materials available in the UC San Diego Library. Access to more content will increase over time. Items have been digitized from the original primary sources in our collections. (quote from website)
The collection can be searched or browsed by collection, creator, format or topic. A variety of collections are included, such as Baja California Postcards, Dr. Seuss Political Cartoons, the papers of local Chicano activist Herman Baca, and a collection of ephemera related to Latin American political elections. Formats include text, images, videos and interviews. This is an excellent, academic resource for locating primary sources.

Website of the Week
Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) : http://www.wiche.edu/wue
WUE is a program that allows students from certain states (WICHE members) to receive reduced tuition from participating 2 and 4 year institutions of higher education outside of their state of residence. There are limitations and guidelines. For example, WUE is not offered to all majors and not all participating institutions offer program to transfer students. However, It’s still a good option to research when applying for college.
From their website:
WICHE's student exchange programs offer a broad range of higher education options for some 36,000 students each year at undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. Residents of WICHE states can gain affordable access to programs, states avoid costly and unnecessary duplication of programs and facilities, and colleges and universities can devote their resources to improving the quality of their educational offerings.
WICHE members include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
For more information, check out their FAQ.

Get ready to vote!
There is a lot on the November 8 ballot! Be prepared and do your homework.
Here are some helpful nonpartisan voting guides to help you to prepare for voting day.
Remember, you don't have to vote on every proposition or every ballot item if you don't want to. The items you choose to vote on will still count.
Learn more about what's on the ballot:
Easy Voter Guide – English and Spanish: Pros/Cons and the impact of propositions on the state budget.
"The aim of the Easy Voter Guide project is to make nonpartisan information about why we vote, how to vote and what’s on the ballot accessible to as many Californians as possible."
Ballot.fyi: This site is run by a nonpartisan group, Citizen and Citizens. It provides concise pro/con summaries, along with specific examples. You will also find "further reading" links to newspaper editorials and opinions about the propositions.
Voters Edge: Plug in your zip code to see a preview of your local ballot, along with nonpartisan, in-depth information.
KPBS Voter Guide: Here's another easy way to easily preview what will be on your local ballot, including nonpartisan summaries.
State of California Voter Information Guide: The state sends each registered voter household an official “Voter Information Guide” with detailed analyses and more information about supporters and opponents.
Have a question about your polling place? What ID do you need to bring? Find out the answers to those questions and more on the official California Where and How to Vote site.
Your voice counts.
