Scholarly journals vs. magazines... what's the difference?

What are scholarly journals?
  • Publish articles written by scholars, specialists, or researchers in the field
  • Include lengthy articles which contain original research
  • Contain articles with cited references
  • Intended for an academic audience and use technical vocabulary
  • Include little or no advertising
What are magazines?
  • Publish articles written by journalists who are summarizing or analyzing a topic for the reader
  • Tend to have short articles (1-5 pages)
  • Contain articles that do not have cited references
  • Intended for a general audience and use conversational language
  • Include extensive commercial advertising
