Database of the Week

In a society where some doctors may be too quick to prescribe drugs to relieve symptoms, and may give little thought to the side effects of these drugs, natural alternatives may be a viable option either in conjunction with, or in place of prescriptions.

But if doctors don’t have the time to educate their patients about these options, how do they become informed?

In an attempt to educate myself about natural, holistic alternatives, I came across Alt HealthWatch. This one-stop shop is an EBSCOhost database that can be found among several Health and Medicine databases listed on the Library's website at http://www2.swccd.edu/~library. All staff and currently enrolled students may access the database 7/24 by logging on with your student ID and password.

This resource enlightens patients about natural, alternative ways to heal illnesses and promote wellness through hundreds of journals and reports (several of which are peer-reviewed), and includes over 200 international publications. I find this particular database a refreshing perspective to health as it offers therapies such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, yoga, chiropractic, nutrition and more!

Website of the Week

Chula Vista Grammar School, circa 1900 (photo from Calisphere)
From the about page:
Calisphere is the University of California's free public gateway to a world of primary sources
More than 200,000 digitized items — including photographs, documents, newspaper pages, political cartoons, works of art, diaries, transcribed oral histories, advertising, and other unique cultural artifacts — reveal the diverse history and culture of California and its role in national and world history.
Calisphere's content has been selected from the libraries and museums of the UC campuses, and from a variety of cultural heritage organizations across California. The collections can be searched or browsed. Contributors come from all over the state, including our very own local Chula Vista Public library. Additionally, the site claims to be a one-stop location for searching over 500 specialized UC websites.

The community college in a global context is edited by Tod Treat and Linda Serra Hagedorn. John Wiley and Sons and Jossey-Bass published it in 2013. It is located on the library’s Stacks section on the third floor. Its call number is LB2328 .C655 2013. You can check out this book for four weeks with your SWC photo ID card.

The community college in a global context  is a great resource for students to learn about community colleges, international education, and the cooperative partnerships between them. Community colleges, like Southwestern College, are building bridges with study abroad programs with other schools outside the United States to enable students to enlarge their educational experience, learn new cultures, and make new friends.
