New Books: Call Number -- Leisure Reading 3950
"Illustrated profiles of fifty pioneering female athletes, from the author of the New York Times bestseller Women in Science. A charmingly illustrated and inspiring book, Women in Sports highlights the achievements and stories of fifty notable women athletes--from well-known figures like tennis player Billie Jean King and gymnast Simone Biles, to lesser-known athletes like skateboarding pioneer Patti McGee and Toni Stone, the first woman to play baseball in a men's professional league. Covering more than forty sports, this fascinating collection also contains infographics about notable women's teams throughout history, pay and media statistics for female athletes, and muscle anatomy. Women in Sports celebrates the success of the tough, bold, and fearless women who paved the way for the next generation of athletes"

Sunday is Earth Day

It may be hard to imagine that before 1970, a factory could spew black clouds of toxic into the air or dump tons of toxic waste into a nearby stream, and that was perfectly legal. They could not be taken to court to stop it.

How was that possible? Because there was no EPA, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act. There were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment.
-- from EPA History: Earth Day

Earth Day was established in April 1970 to draw attention to the pressing need for regulation to protect our environment and quality of life.

Remembering Barbara Bush

First Lady Barbara Bush (June 8, 1925 - April 17, 2018) will be remembered for her frankness, her patriotism, and her focus on family. She also dedicated time and resources to improve literacy throughout the United States.

The SWC Library has many books, articles, and other biographical resources about the life of First Lady Barbara Bush.

Soon after beginning her reign as the nation's 38th first lady, Barbara Pierce Bush made a small change in the private quarters of the White House. She converted the room that had served as a beauty salon for Nancy Reagan into a delivery room for Millie, the Bushes' pregnant English springer spaniel. As an aide to Mrs. Bush told the New York Daily News, "She had no need for a beauty salon. It's the only area without a rug, perfect for a litter of puppies." A few days after the room was made over, six puppies were born, with Bush serving as midwife. The salon-turned-puppy-nursery story illustrates a dramatic difference in personal style between Bush and her predecessor. While Nancy Reagan took pride in cultivating a look of elegance, bringing a kind of designer mentality to the role of first lady, Barbara Bush was a practical, homey, and down-to-earth first lady.

50 Years Ago Today, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was Assassinated

On April 4, 1968, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated.

-------------------------------------------------
There is a little song that we sing in the movement taking place in the South. It goes something like this. "We shall overcome. We shall overcome. Deep in my heart I do believe we shall overcome." And somehow all over America we must believe that we shall overcome and that these problems can be solved. They will be solved before the victory is won.

-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s address to the AFL-CIO Convention, December 11, 1961.

-------------------------------------------------

To learn more about the life of Dr. King, the civil rights activist who we remember today, visit the Library's Biography database page, which contains summaries, articles, primary documents, speeches, images, and more. (Available to all SWC students, faculty, and staff).

To read more about the FBI investigation into the assassination, go to the official report on the U.S. National Archives page.

Want to know more? The Library has many books, e-books, and videos available about Dr. King.
