"While overt prejudice is now much less prevalent than in decades past, subtle prejudice - prejudice that is inconspicuous, indirect, and often unconscious - continues to pervade. This is the prompt: 

Lily seems willing to sacrifice everything to defend her principles and the rights of others. On more than one occasion, she is fired from a teaching position for refusing to back down from what she believes in. Do you applaud Lily’s moral conviction in these instances? Or did you hope that Lily would learn to compromise? Have you ever had to struggle with moral conviction? Did you stand firm or compromise? 

• Essay must be no more than 3 pages, double-spaced, using 12-point type.
• Only original submissions that are the student's own work will be considered. Do not research or use any sources other than Half Broke Horses. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in disqualification.
• Attach an additional page giving name, student ID #, email address, and phone number. No identifiers (name, ID#, etc.) can appear in the essay itself.
• Deadline is Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 4 p.m. Late entries will not be accepted.
• Send essay and additional page as attachments to essaycontest@swccd.edu

"A weakened economy has forced drastic cuts in state higher-education funding, leading many schools to raise tuition to record levels and put the brakes on expansion after years of pell-mell growth fueled by government spending. Meanwhile, colleges and universities are under pressure to rethink their traditional modes of operation as they try to compete with an explosion of new educational models, including for-profit institutions, distance learning and so-called MOOCs — massive online open courses that offer free, high-quality instruction to thousands of digitally connected students simultaneously . . . A 2012 poll of senior college and university administrators found that a staggering 96 percent believe higher education is in crisis. And more than a third of university presidents believe the higher-education industry they lead is 'heading in the wrong direction.'"

Martinez examines the politics of race relations in the nineteenth century, from Lincoln’s struggles with his personal conscience and with the Radical Republicans to economic, social, and political factors that contributed to unfulfilled promises of Reconstruction and the political atmosphere that resulted in severe injustices codified into law. Martinez focuses on the Radical Republicans, particularly Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, and Benjamin Wade, and a host of fiery figures who fomented the issue of racial justice, including William Lloyd Garrison, John Brown, Wendell Phillips, and Frederick Douglass. This is a compelling look at the heat and vituperation still evident in contemporary politics, with historical particularities of the nineteenth century, and the underlying issues of race that resonate today.
