Writing and Performance Workshop with Justin Hudnall (room L238 N/S)

Justin Hudnall holds a BFA from New York University‘s Tisch School of the Arts, by way of the Department of Dramatic Writing. His graduating year coincided with September 11th, which heavily influenced both his writing and his adoption of a career in international humanitarian aid, serving with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as an emergency operations officer in New York and Southern Sudan. Currently, he serves as the Executive Director of So Say We All, a San Diego based non-profit arts collective which provides opportunities for expression and arts education to populations without access. In 2012 he was selected as a San Diego Foundation Creative Catalyst Fellow and recipient of the Rising Arts Leader Award. Justin is a twice finalist for the International Story Contest of Cork, Ireland. His plays have been performed off-broadway at The Atlantic Theater and Director’s Club, as well as several national regional theaters. His prose has been published by The Quotable, Citybeat, Voice of San Diego, Pinchback Press, Naughty American, The Huffington Post, Heinemann Press, and other alt. journalism and literary titles. He is co-editor of Last Night Night On Earth, a collectivist novel chronicling the day leading up to the end of the world through the perspectives of 20 writers all over the world, and The Far East: Everything Just As It Is, a people’s history of San Diego’s East County.

Ella deCastro Baron, a first generation Filipina American, will present her memoir­—Itchy Brown Girl Seeks Employment. Please join us for a lively reading and discussion with the author.

Guest Writers Event: Filipinos in San Diego

Judy Patacsil is a second-generation Filipina American born in San Diego to pioneering immigrant parents. She is a Counselor/Professor at San Diego Miramar College. At Miramar College she initiated Filipino Studies and Filipino Language courses to serve the large Filipino community of San Diego. She is a professor of Filipino Studies and Psy-chology and also is a licensed psychotherapist who leads Mental Health Services at Miramar College.

Professor Felix Tuyay has taught Asian American Studies and Filipino American History for over 30 years. The San Diego chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) is an active community organization. The mission of FANHS is to promote understanding, edu-cation, enlightenment, appreciation, and enrichment through the identification, gathering, preservation, and dis-semination of the history and culture of Filipino Americans in the United States.

Bilingual Poetry Reading

Join us on Thursday, May 5, at 11 AM in Room L238 N/S for the latest installment of the SWC Guest Writers Series. The bilingual poetry reading will highlight writers, editors, and translators from the 2011 San Diego Poetry Annual.

Guest Writers Series: Olga García Echeverría

SWC Guest Writers Series Presents:
Olga García Echeverría

Olga García Echeverría was born and raised in East Los Angeles, California. She has a BA in Ethnic Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Texas at El Paso.

For the past twelve years, she has worked with a wide variety of students, teaching Composition, Literature, Creative Writing, History, and Civics. Currently, she works for the Upward Bound Program at Los Angeles City College, where she teaches English and Composition to high school students living in the South Los Angeles region.

Her first book, Falling Angels: Cuentos y Poemas, was published by Calaca Press and Chibcha Press in September of 2008. A copy of her book is currently on order for the Library.

This event is sponsored and supported by SWC’s Foundation and the School of Language and Literature. The Guest Writers Series invites authors whose work involves universal themes and multicultural contexts. Live literature enriches audiences by offering new ways to view everyday experiences. Faculty, staff, and students will gain an opportunity to think critically about the world around them through the myriad perspectives offered by the guest writers and their work.
