On May 26, 2009 President Barack Obama nominated Sonia Maria Sotomayor for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court to replace retiring Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Justice David Souter. Judge Sotomayor is currently a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. If confirmed, she would be the court's first Hispanic justice and its third female justice. The Senate Judiciary Committee will begin Judge Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation hearings for the US Supreme Court on July 13, 2009.
