Do you like to travel and learn about different cultures? Now you can do it while living in San Diego.

The San Diego Participant Observer is an online magazine that provides information about cultural events, books, movies, cuisines, recipes, news; practically anything connected to cultures around the world. It has been published by the Worldview Project, a non-profit organization, which was founded in 2001.

Volunteer contributors cull the multicultural news every week to gather articles worldwide, and produce a newsletter every Friday that they send to your mail box if you sign up. You can also follow them on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn.

The online magazine also welcomes volunteers. On their website, the calendar feature gives you dates and locations of many multicultural events in San Diego. Under Cultural Tidings readers can find interesting articles from around the world. On the right side of the page under Articles and Features they present highlights from the current edition. This time there is an article about San Diego’s Chicano Park.

Their new Book Club invites the interested public to read a book and meet once a month to discuss it. The mother organization, The Worldview Project organizes an International Music and Dance Festival for the 4th year now. This year it will take place on September 20th.

This is a very rich source of cultures, literature and music for anybody who wouldn't want to miss multicultural events in San Diego.

Did you know in the Library’s collection there's a great title honoring Hispanic Heritage Month?

It's called, Eight Bright Candles : Courageous Women of Mexico. It's written by Doris E. Perlin and published in 1995. It is located in the library’s main stacks collection shelves and its call number is CT3295 .P47 1995. It can be found through the SWC Library’s Search the Library Catalog webpage. Just type in the title in the search box and you can find it in the results list.

This book is a great resource that profiles eight strong-minded women who stepped outside the boundaries of subservience to fight for personal and political freedoms, and helped light the path for women who would come after them. Eight Bright Candles offers provides short biographies on women, such as Dona Marina and Catarina de San Juan.

Come to the library to see more Hispanic Heritage-related titles on display this month.

Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014-15 edition. Reference Section HF 5381 A1 O36 2014-15

The Occupational Outlook Handbook is an annual publication of the U.S. Department of Labor and the information in it is updated each year.

It is “a career resource offering information on the hundreds of occupations that provide the overwhelming majority of jobs in the United States. Each occupational profile describes the duties required by the occupation, the work environment of that occupation, the typical education and training needed to enter the occupation, the median pay for workers in the occupation, and the job outlook into the next 10 years for that occupation."

The information provided for each occupation is comprehensive and current, and users should find the required education and training section and the job outlook section included in each occupation description particularly helpful.

You can find this up-to-date resource in the Reference Section of the Library. Stop at the reference desk and ask the librarian for assistance.
