“Fish Farming,” by Jennifer Weeks, July 27, 2007

Is it safe for humans and the environment?
Global demand for fish products has doubled since the 1950s and is still rising. Today more than 40 percent of the world's seafood comes not from wild catches but from land-based and offshore farms.

Some fish farms pollute surrounding waters, and escaped farm fish compete with wild stocks and spread diseases. There are also growing concerns about whether imported seafood is safe to eat and whether the United States regulates fish imports strictly enough.

  • Are farmed fish safe to eat?
  • Is aquaculture polluting the oceans?
  • Should the United States commercialize genetically engineered fish?

“ Cuba 's Future,” by Peter Katel, July 20, 2007
Will Castro's influence endure?

Cuba is poised at the brink of change. After more than 45 years in power, Fidel Castro, now 80, has relinquished power to his brother Raúl . The former Soviet ally has been a thorn in the sides of successive U.S. administrations – and during the 1962 “Cuban missile crisis” brought the world to the brink of atomic war. Now Washington worries whether his death could provoke instability in Cuba leading to a mass exodus toward Florida 's nearby shores.

  • Is Cuba on the verge of change?

  • Should the United States lift restrictions on travel to Cuba ?

  • Does Cuba threaten the U.S.?

“Students Under Stress” by Marcia Clemmitt , July 13, 2007
Do schools assign too much homework?

The average homework load for first- through third-graders has doubled over the past two decades, even though research shows homework doesn't benefit such young children. Indeed, some schools require preschoolers to tackle academic subjects like reading and writing.

Some schools have responded by limiting homework for the youngest children and downplaying stress-causing programs, such as academic honor rolls. At the same time, however, U.S. high school students spend less time in class than students in most other countries, and their homework loads remain far below the two hours per day that research shows is optimal for college-bound students.

  • Are students today under more academic pressure than in past generations?
  • Are schools assigning too much homework?
  • Are high-stakes tests putting too much pressure on students?

New Book of the Month

The Last Days of Dogtown
By Anita Diamant

Anyone who treasured Year of Wonders: a novel of the plague will want to read The Last Days of Dogtown by the author of The Red Tent. Like Year of Wonders, Dogtown was inspired by a real place, this one in early nineteenth-century Massachusetts. Other parallels are that it is a story of a community of dwindling population in a harsh environment, that there are strong women characters, and that the details of domestic life are so vividly given that the reader seems to be there, undernourished and shivering in the cold. This is not a tale that tells of pretty people and homes, not a tale that ends happily for all concerned. Not a “pretty” tale, but a beautifully written, magnificent story that will have the reader not wanting to finish.

The Last Days of Dogtown has been nominated for College Book for spring 2008. It is available for checkout in the New Book area of the library until July 16 (call number 3011).
